Passage: Matthew 5:17-20
Service Type:

We continue the sermon series, Matthew: Treasure from things new and things old.  Now that Jesus has been properly introduced (Matthew 1:1 – 4:16) we see His ministry to Israel begin (4:17 – 11:1).  The OT prophets said, “thus says the Lord” to indicate their authority.  Jesus did the same by saying “You have heard that it was said, but I say to you.”  His preaching lifted the Mosaic law to its intended level, which He later summarized in Matthew 22:37-40:  “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’  This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.’”  Matthew 5:21-28 takes six OT laws and drives them to the heart level teaching us, His followers, how to really love our neighbors as ourselves.
