In Chapter 16, Matthew’s Gospel continues to address how Jesus reinterprets many of Israel’s old traditions by addressing His role as the Messiah. Before Jesus travels to Jerusalem, He subverts the disciples’ expectations and predicts His death on the cross. Instead of acting in terms of the Israelites’ expectations, He acts as the suffering Lamb.
