In Luke we learn of John's Baptism and Jesus' Baptism. The second gives life to the first. In water baptism we publically acknowledge the inner work of the Spirit in bringing a person to faith in Jesus and repentance, their turning from and being forgiven of their sin. It is a step of initiation for all believers to take. Jesus' Baptism with the Holy Spirit is also for each and every believer. Both of these are vital for each of us and are part of God preparing us for Jesus' coming.
