We continue the sermon series, Matthew: Treasure from things new and things old.  Much of Matthew is made up of Jesus’ significant teaching discourses. However, before Jesus begins to preach and teach some key events occur.  In our focus passage we have Jesus being led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tested by the devil.  Satan tempts Jesus to use His sonship to serve Himself.  Jesus rejects these temptations.  Later in Matthew Jesus says:  The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.  We are also true sons and daughters of God as He leads us in lives of self-emptying rather than self-serving.
